At the back of Le Capitole that they once formed part of, topped off with a bell tower of Flemish inspiration, the archive tower seems to be an architectural curiosity.
Designed to hold the gunpowder and the archives that guaranteed municipal freedoms, this building constructed in 1525 has a defensive allure that has led it to be known locally as the Donjon by the people of Toulouse. Stuck between the majestic Capitole, the metro station and the shops, it is easy to walk past without noticing it if you are not careful!
Perfectly well-preserved, it was one of the buildings restored by Viollet-le-Duc in the XIX Century and has been the headquarters of the Toulouse tourist office since 1948.
Among the objects it housed as part of its former role you can find, most notably, a safe that was opened using 7 keys (one per Capitoul): any documents were certainly safe in there!
