MUSEE DES TRANSPORTS ET DES COMMUNICATIONS
The medical history of Toulouse through 7 centuries of astonishing medication and surgical instruments is on show in a remarkable building whose garden is home to a giant shell.
On the left bank of the River Garonne, the Hôtel-Dieu Saint-Jacques is a medieval hospital that has been listed by UNESCO since 1998 and now houses the administrative offices of the CHU of Toulouse, the European Institute of Telemedicine as well as the museums of the history and instruments of medicine.
A rich collection of tableaux, sculptures and medical objects retraces the evolution of the hospitals of Toulouse and of how medicine was taught.
The pilgrims room, columns room and the chapel of the Hôtel-Dieu are also worth a look (no free access), as are the gardens in which we can find a pond in the form of a giant scallop shell that reminds us that this venue sits along the Way of St James pilgrimage route.
